Wagga Wagga High School is always about offering the latest in opportunities to learn and develop as a student. Reflecting on data linked to attendance, positive and negative entries on Sentral, suspensions and the Tell Them From Me survey; it clearly shows a trend that students in Year 8 and Year 9 disengage from school and their learning. This is an issue at all schools.
As a school we want our students to have a love for learning that is not driven only by the need to complete a syllabus program. To create this opportunity to be fully engaged by their learning our school is offering two electives in the second semester of Year 8 that are decided by each individual student. Each student will nominate two areas of learning they wish to follow for two periods a week over two terms. After selection the students will be placed in groups of similar interests and have a teacher as a facilitator. We will organise experts to come and discuss their learning at school, or for the students to visit their place of work to further extend their experience and knowledge. The students will create and present a resource that reflects their learning, in a format of their choice. There will be an opportunity in term 4, 2019, for all students to display and present their learning to the school and Year 8ing that is not driven only by the need to complete a syllabus or program. What happens now?
Students nominate two areas they wish to learn more about. Students should think beyond traditional school subjects. Ideas might include myth busting, forensic science, fishing, basic car maintenance, poetry, stage, film and production, fitness and recovery and green screen production just to start you thinking. We will consider every suggestion and if we can make it happen, we will.
If you have any questions please contact the school. Families.
